sub-inspector rajendra tendulkar’s quick thinking enabled him to nab a robber just as he was making his getaway after assaulting and robbing a businessman at lokhandwala complex on april 15. tendulkar, of the oshiwara police, was alone at swami samarth nagar chowky when a man on a motorbike approached him, saying a group of men was assaulting dilip shah (42).
“it was 6.15 pm when the man on the motorcycle told me about the assault. as i was alone, there was no transport, so i immediately hopped onto the motorcycle and asked him to drive me to the spot. i needed him to be there as he was the only one who’d seen the culprits. by the time we got there, all four assailants had fled. i told the motorcycle rider to take me towards four bunglows. there was dense traffic and we soon spotted the car in which the assailants were travelling.� “i knew they were armed with choppers and a revolver,� said tendulkar. as soon as they spotted tendulkar, the assailants jumped out of the car and fled. “i took out my revolver and began chasing them,� said tendulkar. he managed to apprehend abdul shaikh (39), who had a country-made firearm on him. however, the rest got away. shah has suffered several head injuries. the abandoned car and shah’s stolen briefcase were recovered by the police. shaikh, it was found, had recently been released from jail where he was serving time for robbery.
